Even as geezers, they’ll always be  (along with Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson), The Outlaws. Eighth-grade graduate Shaver wrote the Honky Tonk Hero’s album that gave country music a muscular new poeticism,  but he never became a big star, racking up “more miles than money”.
