Hitchcock had a thing for bags, pre-dating our own obsession with them by a half a century. In the 50’s and 60’s, status must-haves were furs and jewels and bags were affordable enough that a new outfit usually included a new bag and shoes. (Think about $35-$100 each, at a time when dresses cost that as well.) The colors and nuance of costume were obsessive elements of story-telling and character for Hitchcock, and his cool blonde heroines were not shy about the bags they carried (Yellow Bag, Marnie) or discovered (Red Bag, Rear Window).
In 2012, Mark Cross re-introduced The ‘Grace’ Trunk”, the bag Kelly used as an overnight tote for her negligee. Lined in red leather, it’s been updated with an optional shoulder strap. $1.695 at Barney’s.
