Michelle Dockery Sings: The Folks Who Live On A Hill
Downton Abbey Season 3 has ended with a tragic surprise and now Sunday nights go From Class to Crass with the return of Donald Trump and his attention-starved B-Listers (the word celebrity is an over-promise
with this crowd). So while we wait for “Mr. Selfridge” and “Mad Men” to rescue us, and hope that Primetime On Demand updates “The Good Wife” reruns, here’s a look at what we’re missing in the old Ed Sullivan at 9 time slot:
The Best Of Maggie Smith, Dowager Countess Grantham:
Just 19 when she married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon in 1895, Almina was actually the illegitimate daughter of Alfred de Rothschild. She arrived with a stupendous dowry She attended the funeral of Queen Victoria, the coronation of Edward VII and all the other grand and royal events.
Life changed in August 1914 when the First World War broke out and Almina rolled up her sleeves, turned Highclere Castle into a hospital and began to admit patients coming back from the trenches.
After the war, Lady Carnarvon returned the Castle back to a family home.
The end of the First World War signaled the return to Egypt for her husband the 5th Earl of Carnarvon,, who with Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.
